Vasily Konovalenko worked at the former Kirovsky, currently Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg, where he created opera and ballet scenery. He later turned to stone carving, inspired by Sergei Prokofiev’s ballet “The Stone Flower”.

Vasily Vasilevich Konovalenko was born on July 5, 1929, the fifth child and only son of a Russian mother and a Ukrainian father living in Petrovka, a small town in east-central Ukraine.
